In 1950, Hartselle had its own ZIP code though it remained part of the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area until 2006 when it became one of five municipalities within the new city of Hooverville which was created from parts of both Butler and Shelby Counties after being chosen as the winner over competing bids from Decatur, Tuscaloosa, Enterprise (now Bessemer), Cullman (now Colbert) County townships Hartselle has seen many changes over its years including becoming an agricultural center with cotton production continuing to be the mainstay through most of the 20th century; however since 2000s there has been growth in other businesses such as healthcare services., manufacturing and retail shops

Hartselle is a city in Escambia County, Alabama, United States. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1881 by J.P. Hartselle and named for him. It became a consolidated city in 1907 and was named for General Robert E. Lee after he surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The town of Hartselle was incorporated as a municipality in 1912 and again renamed for General Robert E. Lee in 1928 when it merged with the City of Mobile to form Mobile County.[1] The now-defunct White Sulphur mine located within the limits of Hartselle produced coal until 1966 when it closed down due to heavy pollution from acid mine drainage typical of Appalachian Coal Fields used there up until that time. Hartselle has always been an important center for coalmining but only recently have new mines started up here such as the one run by Alpha Natural Resources called "The Loop".[2] Today most people live outside the boundaries of Hartselle proper which are all withinMobile County although there are some small amounts of residents scattered throughoutEscambia and Baldwin counties as well as into neighboring Jefferson County (Louisiana). For years much activity took place just outside the limits annexed by Mobile County: production at nearby Red Mountaincoal Mine ceased completely following surface mining activities underground; this area is now known as Black Mesa National Forest[3].
