Hartselle is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Hartselle School District serves students from pre-K to 12th grade. The town was chartered on November 15, 1892 and named for General John A. Hartselle, who had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later became an insurance salesman in Mobile Bay City. The first post office was established in 1893 and remained in operation until it closed on July 14, 1907. Hartselle's early history can be traced to two Baptist missionaries who arrived here in 1892: Revs. George Witherspoon and James Loyd Coker (1851-1927). Reverend Witherspoon was born near Athens, Georgia and came to Mobile Bay City when he was just over 20 years old in 1872; he died there on October 7, 1927 after a long career as pastor of First Baptist Church of Mobile Bay City. James Loyd Coker (1850-1928) also came to Mobile Bay City soon after its incorporation as a city on December 5, 1890; he became one of the most prominent bankers and business men of his time hereabouts and later served as Mayor of Mobile from 1916 until his death In 1938. In 1902 local sheriff JNO Ewing appointed Professor Augustus Pemberton director of physical education for all school districts within Jefferson County; this appointment helped establish Hartselle as one of the leading educational communities within that county well into the 21st century! Professor Pemberton remains an important figure today with many graduates now working throughout our district as educators or administrators! As mentioned before Hartselle began receiving mail only from Huntsville through May 1865; by 1898 however mail had begun arriving regularly from Decatur too! This increase may have been due to new highway construction which opened up much moreened trade between those two cities! Additional growth occurred during World War II with residents influxing into what then seemed like a very small community; real estate values soared following that war’s devastation! After World War II things slowed considerably but by 1960 there were still few details left about life back then other than memories shared by some elderly citizens “back when everything worked good” according to one such individual! By 1970 however even these details were no longer common enough so newer generations often learn about their grandparents' lives only through oral traditions passed down through family members!!! Some progress has been made since then including website access which gives residents both an opportunity to share information about their hometown while also preserving its history!!! Hartselle experienced another boom period following Hurricane Katrina but since that time its economy has slowly declined although recent annexation by Decatur has not stopped retail businesses from continuing operations here albeit at reduced levels!!
