He and his family were followed by other settlers over the next few years until the community had a total of ten residents in 1830. In 1833, James Withers founded a cotton gin in what is now Hartselle and began to process cotton for local markets. By 1840, Withers had developed two other cotton gins: one in Mobile and one near present day Decaturville (now Orchard). In 1864, General Edwin Ewell took command of Sherman's army during the American Civil War and destroyed all crop fields east of Mobile Bay as part of his "March to Cairo." This left behind an extensive area free from cultivation which became known as the "Cotton Belt". In 1865, white farmers who could not afford to buy land set up barnyards around their homes to dry their produce; this resulted in Hartselle becoming an agricultural center with four large mills processed cottonseed into textiles and exported throughout south Alabama
