Hartselle is a town in Coffee County, Alabama, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It was founded by James Hartselle in 1826. The first post office in Hartselle was established in 1827. Hartselle is located on the Talladega River just east of its confluence with the Coosa River. It is part of the Mobile metropolitan area and the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The town originally consisted of a few scattered log builds along the riverbank, surrounded by forest land which still exists today around most of downtown and parts of eastern downtown (the old courthouse square). In 1829, JamesHartselle donated 2,000 acres (8 km2) to make into a townsite consisting of square blocks or "town squares". This gift became known as "Town Square" because it provided enough space for all eventual development and included roads, churches, businesses and residences within its limits. The original homes were built between 1830 and 1840 primarily frame structures built by local farmers who found this new community convenient to market their crops and trade goods with other nearby settlements. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in "Town Square". Over time many homes were replaced with brick or stone buildings including some that remain today such as Baldwin Hall Schoolhouse which features an unusual roof form called a V-shape that was introduced during World War II due to wartime shortages of metal roofs available in general. Many homes also feature elaborately carved cornices or dentils that date back to this period as well; some are even original slave quarters from when slaves worked hereabouts until they free themselves early in the 19th century. In 1851 Hartselle's first store opened using earnings from sales from his cattle ranching business - one reason why it continued to be one of the few small towns within Coffee County where both menial labor (livestock husbandry) and wealthy citizens could find access to quality goods regardless of location. That year also saw construction on what would become known as Main Street; later renamed State Street after General George Washington Carver who donated land for it near what is now Hartselle High School - an event which marked not only inauguration day for President James Keesler but also beginning a long history of annual agricultural fairs which have given Town Square much street name traffic throughout their years existence! After Carver's donation many more farms added their products to local markets each springtime leading up until about 1960 when supermarket shopping became more prevalent throughout the county making Downtown almost completely obsolete! Even now occasional Agricultural Showivals are held at TownSquare every year attracting thousands of people! One common attribute found throughout most Midwestern U S towns during this time period was Royer's Drugstore - considered one of America's oldest commercial enterprises open on State Street - having been open since 1857! With such busy retail activity going on several families took advantageof Mayor Hartsfield’s offer for them to build their own little shopping center around 1915 dubbed “City Hall”; however never really materialized until after Hartsfield’s death in 1965followed by control passing through hands variously before finally being sold off again less than 10 years later! Today City Hall remains virtually unchanged except for updated flooring inside since it will soon be used as storage space once again following demolition next door!!!
