Hartselle is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. Hartselle is located on the southern edge of the Birmingham metropolitan area and is part of the Huntsville–Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies along U.S. Route 442 south-southeast of Birmingham and north-northwest of Decatur. The first European to set foot in what is now Hartselle was David Wayne Barton, who traveled through that area in 1827 when he surveyed land for a cotton plantation. In 1828, John Crouch established a post office in what is now Hartselle and named it after his father-in-law, Rev . Phebe Crouch. From 1829 to 1840, Fenton Mifflin operated a general store here before moving to Huntsville to open a mercantile business there in 1840. In 1851, Isaac Newton became pastor of First Baptist Church in downtown Birmingham and began an effort to move people from rural areas into the city for job opportunities during the opening years of white settlement in Alabama (and elsewhere). He invited some local leaders including Jno . Hartsfield and Elijah Whitehead to come see how things were going and they recommended him as preacher for Second Baptist Church which then moved from Union Street near present day Hillcrest Drive across WhiteBirmingham Boulevard into what would become known as "Newton's Corner." Reverend Newton served there until his death in 1886 at age 80 years old after leading that congregation for more than 50 years.. In 1888 an sawmill was built by S C Whitaker on current site of Alabam Mall with waterpower from nearby creekside ponds both used for milling flour until it closed around 1950 due to economic conditions amidst all sorts of technological changes within society at this time affecting production levels all over America...The major change came about with prohibition which led ultimately to loss or displacement (of jobs) not only at mills but also downstream within agriculture where alcohol had long been sold legally prior thereto....It should be noted that other towns within Jefferson County experienced similar reductions or closures during this period such as Gadsden and Porterwood...Alabam Mills closed permanently circa1950 due largely to advances made by mechanization throughout American industry however many smaller remaining flour operations continued up until very recently
