Hartselle, Alabama is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The first settler in Hartselle was John Crouch in 1827. The town was founded on May 1,1848 by J.C. Lovejoy and Wm Hensley as a trading post between Decatur and Huntsville with a landing point on the Mobile River. A post office was established at Hartselle on November 8, 1849; it remained in operation until it closed on December 15, 1954. The first school in Hartselle was built in 1850 by Mrs. Lucy Heard and operated for one year before being replaced by a log cabin schoolhouse that burned down in 1851. A new school was built on the site of the old school from 1855 to 1861 under the leadership of Mrs. Gertrude Spriggs Richardson and opened for instruction on January 1, 1862; it served as both primary and secondary education for residents of Hartselle until 1966 when it became an all-girls high school known as Parkview High School Inc.. Hartselle, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It lies just east of Mobile on the Gulf coast and is named after General John Hartselle, a Confederate general during the American Civil War. The first resident of Hartselle was George Washington Cushing who settled there in 1827. A post office was established here in 1835 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The first store in what is now Hartselle opened its doors on January 6, 1881. The name of the town changed from "Hartsville" to "Hartselle" on September 11th of that year by an act of the Marshall County Board of Commissioners. In 1905 a hydroelectric power plant was built near present-day Hartselle and began generating electricity for local use soon thereafter. A water main being laid along I-10 brought development to this area which included many homes and businesses as well as new churches and schools over time. By 1932 there were over 1,000 residents living within walking distance of downtown Hartselle with a total population size approaching 2,000 people according to the census taken that year ! During World War II service members from nearby Mobile served at various locations throughout Alabama including Fort Chaffin (later known as Fort Hood) and Camp Ladd (later also known as Camp Lewis). After the war ended many veterans returned home while others continued working locally side by side with their families until they left again for other assignments or simply retired altogether . The town was named for General James Hartselle, a Confederate general who fought against the Union during the war. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 200 people.
