Hartselle, Alabama is a small town in the Huntsville-Decatur County metropolitan area of Alabama. The population was 5,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1871 by John D. Hartselle and named for him. Hartselle had been born in Germany and immigrated to America when he was age 10. He bought a tract of land on which he built a home and began to farm it. In 1878, Hartselle married Sarah Jane White and they started a family. They were later divorced but continued to live together until his death in 1923. Their son John D., Jr., became mayor of Hartselle from 1951-1964 and then served as governor from 1967-1975 before taking office as United States Senator from Alabama from 1976-1981; he resigned after being elected Governor because of term limits set by the U S Constitution). The first post office in Hartselle was established in 1872, and it remained open until 1955. The first store opened in 1874, when Jno Hartschel & Son started selling groceries door to door across the street from their home on Third Street (now First Street). By 1886, there were six businesses serving town residents: two stores, one grocery store, four blacksmiths, three printers/binders/photographers, one hotel (the "Mountain View") and one physician's office (the "Pine Tree"). The population grew rapidly during the 19th century due to slavery brought over by white settlers who worked on plantations near Mobile Bayou where many African Americans worked as slaves before emancipation; some freedmen lived in towns such as Selma or Montgomery while others returned home to work on their farms or manufacturing plants outside of town. In 1901, both schools within town were closed due to financial concerns following an outbreak of tuberculosis that year among local black residents living near school sites; all students except for white children attending private schools were sent away for treatment rather than attend public schools which were then overcrowded with students from surrounding townships (one reason why so few African American high school graduates could find employment upon returning home). Hartselle is a town in Choctaw County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tensaw-Marion Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hartselle was originally named Johnstown and then changed to Hartselle in 1887. The first settler in what is now Hartselle was Capt. James Denton who arrived there with his family in 1817 from Tennessee. He built a log cabin on the east side of the creek that bears his name, which still stands today near the intersection of US 301 and FM 527 (formerly US 82). The first school in what is now Hartselle was built by Mrs. Anna Price about 1830 on land donated by her husband, David Price. In 1834, Captain Denton's daughter Margaret died suddenly while attending school at home; her brother Jno., who had also just migrated to Alabama from Tennessee took up residence for her and taught until she returned to school in 1835 under instruction from Dr. John Chilton teaching at a mission academy located near present day Vestavia Hills, Alabama (now Birmingham). In 1840 Capt Daniel Edwards settled in what is now Hartselle and became its first postmaster when letters were sent through horseback ridersaddle overland mail routes between Mobile Bayou and Montgomery settlements further north across Lake Pontchartrain In 1847 Colonel Joseph Hargrave established a military Academy here with brick classrooms and barracks for cadets coming from all over America In 1850 Mrs Jane Eagleton donated land northeast of town on which she erected a two story blacksmith shop/frame house called “Mama” . She also provided free seed for every acre contributed to her farmstead by local farmers . From this point forward most businesses conducted their operations within walking or driving distance of Mama’s storehouse where they could be stocked before transportation times limited their product reach to customers outside the immediate area In 1861 Mr Elisha Pate opened an Odd Fellows farmboy store here after moving from Huntsville together with his wife Eliza Pate & six children . They would eventually open another store next door Mollie's Store later that year before closing it due to financial difficulties A post office operated out of Mama's store until 1958 when it moved into its current location behind First Baptist Church on US 301 near mile marker 69A Samuel Morse opened hisOffice Depot here around 1909 followed by Sears Roebuck & Co which opened its doors across FM 527 not too long after HartfordelLE became chartered as an independent city Limits began changing rapidly as people pulled away from rural life seeking opportunities for themselves & their families throughout much of Appalachia during this time period

The town was named after General John Hartselle, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and helped to establish Alabama as a state.
