Hartselle is a city in Clarke County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,883 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clarke County. Hartselle is located on the Cahaba River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification), abbreviated "Cfa". The town of Hartselle was organized on February 17, 1814 by surveyors named James Hartsfield and John Beal from Athens, Georgia. The town site was purchased from the Choctaw Nation in 1815 for $2,500. In 1818, Hartselle became the county seat of Clarke County after it was moved from Athens to its present location on the Cahaba River. On December 12, 1830, a tornado touched down near Hartselle and destroyed most of the town center; however much of what remained standing still remains today as a museum district known as "The Gilded Age." In 1870, an act passed by Congress designated part of Clarke County as The Agricultural Reserve which included all or parts of ten counties in south central Alabama including Hartselle. This area now encompasses all but two counties in Alabama: Limestone and Shelby

Hartselle, Alabama is a town located in Marshall County, Alabama. The population was 6,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Hartselle were those who came overland from Georgia in 1814. They called the place "Hartselle" after General James Hartsfield, who commanded an American army during the Mexican War and helped drive Mexico out of Texas. The town was incorporated on February 11, 1865 by a vote of residents of Hartselle paid for by $1 per capita as assessed at that time. It was named for Capt. John Clements Hartselle (1815-1882), a Confederate Veteran and one of many citizens honored with this distinction during Reconstruction era in America. Hartselle's heyday as a center of commerce and culture began with its appearance on the map in 1875 when railroad developers established line between Mobile and Montgomery to create new markets for their products. By 1880 Hartselle had become known as "the most important cotton community in Alabama." In 1886 it became one of five towns within the newly created Birmingham metropolitan area which served as its own government with its own police force and budgeting process separate from that of Birmingham proper. This unique arrangement continued until 1963 when all but two of Birmingham's municipalities were consolidated into one city under Mayor Bullock's leadership - providing us today with an area significantly larger than any other city in America without having lost any ground to suburban sprawl or automobile Dependence . Hartselle has experienced some modest prosperity since then; however, it remains primarily a rural community engaged in agriculture, poultry production, small business services and tourism
