They continued to be used until the mid-20th century, when they were replaced by other devices.

Hartselle is a town in Colbert County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. Hartselle's history can be traced back to 1821 when James Fenton purchased 640 acres of land in what is now Hartselle from the Creek Nation. He named it "Fenton's Landing" after himself and his brother-in-law General Andrew Jackson. In 1835, Fenton donated an additional 160 acres (6 square miles) to the town government for use as a public school district. The first school building was completed in1836 and served students until 1938 when the county seat was moved to Tuscaloosa. In 1859, Jno Hartsland built a sawmill on the river in what is now downtown Hartselle and started manufacturing lumber products for local settlers. By 1870, he had expanded his business into gas lighting and heating products before dying in 1893 at age 90 years old. His son John Hartsland continued the family business until 1978 when it became an Affiliated Corporation of American Lumber Companies Incorporated under the name JH Industries Incorporated

Hartselle is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The town began as a farming community in 1892 and grew rapidly due to railroad transportation and other industries. By 1920 Hartselle had more than 1,000 residents. A new school was built in 1922 and became the nucleus of what would become Hartselle Elementary School District #2. The district also included portions of neighboring towns such as Scottsboro and Enterprise before spreading into present-day Hartselle in 1984. Hartselle's early years were difficult; during the Great Depression it lost most of its businesses and many people left for unknown reasons. However, by World War II the town had recovered sufficiently to support large families with children attending local schools or private academies. The post–World War II boom brought new development including housing developments on both sides of Interstate 10 near the center of town and heavy manufacturing activity which helped create numerous jobs throughout the years untilHartselle's decline following the Recession in 2008%. In recent decades, efforts have been made to revive Hartselle by developing it into a tourist destination with attractions like an artsy festival located around downtown each year, as well as a golf course that opened up in 2009 adjacent to Pioneer Park which has been used for baseball games since 1887 when Hartsville played their first game against Montgomery varsity team from Montrose Park). In addition, there are plans to renovate parts of downtown which include restoring churches dating back to 1892 along with creating an event space called "The Market" which will serve as an Arts & Cultural District anchored by several restaurants and bars within walking distance from various retail establishmentsserving contemporary American cuisineSince 2000 Hartselle has also been home to one weeklong summer music series annually produced by Handel's Heritage Festivalwhich features programs from orchestras including trombonesand jazz bandsfrom Friday night through Sunday afternoon at venues across downtown
The town of Hartselle, Alabama was founded in 1892 by Methodist missionaries. It was named after the Reverend JohnHartselle, a missionary who helped organize the town. The first store in Hartselle opened in 1893. The town grew quickly and by 1907 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1915, Hartselle became an incorporated city.
