In 1978, Hartselle lost its high school football championship against Tuscaloosa County Technical Institute; however, local residents voted not only to keep the football team but also rename the school "Hartsolleville" after their fallen community members who had helped makeHartselle what it is today. Hartselle is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur metropolitan area. The Hartselle School District serves Hartselle and its surrounding areas. The community was first settled in 1868 when men from Decatur started to homestead in what is now Hartselle. A courthouse was built northeast of town in 1889 by Judge Alfred Lewis Stone; it burned down five years later but was rebuilt and served until 1925. In 1905, two brothers named Augustus Crouch bought land near present-day downtown Hartselle from Wm Kappelbach for $2 per acre (about US$ ). They began farming there and developed the land into what is today one of the most heavily populated rural areas in Alabama with more than 4,000 people living there at various points during the 20th century. In 1908, Gentry Sells located a refrigeration plant on land he had purchased northwest of town along Choctawhatchee River; it became one of Mobile's largest employers during World War II. After Mobile's city government collapsed following racially charged riots throughout much of 1933–1934, Mayor Everett McCain relocated all municipal services—including police and fire—to Valdosta on October 15, 1933.
Hartselle still has its own mayor as well as its own City Councils/Councilman Precincts (although all elected officials are listed on their individual websites).
The current mayor is Donnie Atkinson with term expiring January 1st 2021.
