By 1840 there were three churches and twenty-four residents living in what is now downtown Hartselle. The first post office was established at this location on July 1, 1840. In 1846 an act passed by the Alabama Legislature designated land east of Pratt Street as section 3 of podunk township for white settlement. This act created much controversy as many people traveled to that area to find land that would give them power to vote and owned property western of Pratt Street which became known as blacktown
