Hartselle is a city in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,036 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The community was named after General Andrew Jackson's brother-in-law and Hartselle Plantationowner James Fenton. The first settler in what is now Hartselle was John Hartsfield who arrived in 1827 from Mobile, Alabama. He built a cabin on the east side of town which he called "Hartsfield's Cabin." A post office was established at Hartselle in 1830, and by 1839 it had become known as "Hartselle." In 1856 the town had 8 families living there and it had dwindled to just 100 people when a group of businessmen donated land for an Agricultural Fair that would be held annually at McConnell Park. The fair became so successful that it continued annually until 1924 when it was discontinued due to World War I patriotism changes. In 1925 the new courthouse was built and part of its interior still remains today as part of the McConnell Park Visitor Center. The city started off as just a few homes with only 10 residents in 1938 when a small dam across Upson River were constructed which provided irrigation water for surrounding farms and led to increased trade within the community during this time period. By 1970 Hartselle had turned into one of Butler County's largest cities with over 100 businesses clustered around downtown including several banks, restaurants, stores and more than 20 churches/mosques along with numerous sports teams such as baseball (the original team), basketball (then known as "Pistons"), football (now known as "Alabama Crimson Tide"), tennis (now known as "Alabama tennis"), golf (now called simply "Tennis", formerly also known as "American golf" or simply "Golf") and rodeo (" steer wrestling"). With all these businesses came high school kids from throughout Butler County coming to attend local universities such Asbury University which then stimulated job growth for many local citizens too; i.e., many people leading careers outside their home communities despite having no formal education beyond high school diploma or less before getting their start in life - something not easily done back then! In recent years much has changed both physically and economically withinHartselle thanks largely to Interstate 5 expansion projects associated with development nearby such AT&T Stadium & American Express Stadium while also other large developments like Tyson Foods Corporate Headquarters〔the latter project resulting in significant layoffs within neighboring businesses near Tyson Foods〔and even some displaced jobs during Hurricane Katrina�s landfall but overall things have been slowly improving‱ever since Mayor Donnie White took office five years ago creating buzzword friendly initiatives like 〘Neighborhood Watch' amidst stricter zoning regulations aimed at keeping crime rates low while adding more business opportunities for locals through economic development via government contracting etc.?
