Gulf Shores is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,488 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The city is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Gulf Shores were Captain John Stroud and his company of Englishmen who landed on Pensacola Bay on November 13, 1794 during their exploratory voyage across North America. They named their landing place "Gulf Shore." A year later, August 28, 1795, General James McDonough's army landed here with 3200 men under Major Isaac Stevens from Virginia after driving off an invading Spanish force led by Don José de la Cueva y Mora at the Battle of Pensacola Bay. USS Constitution launched from Mobile Bay under command of Commodore Matthew Perry on October 10th 1805 destroyed the Spanish coastal battery at Fort Mackinac (present day Muskegon Heights) and thereby saved Pensacola Bay for American navigation. Afterward Mississippi Territory was organized as Alabama Territory in 1807 and Gulfshore became its capital. Gulf Shores experienced rapid growth following its incorporation into Alabama Territory in 1807 as it became an important commercial center due to its location on Mobile Bay and its ability to provide access to world markets through trade with Europe and Mexico City. The port was also a major transportation hub with ferries linking Mobile Bay to other parts of the state and beyond. At its peak in the 1830s, Gulfshore employed over 20% of all workers inAlabama’s manufacturing sector and produced goods such as cotton textiles, shoes, rails, bricks and masonry products that could be shipped throughout much of Deep South America or Europe. However economic decline began to take hold starting around 1840 when railroads arrived from Detroit offering limitless opportunities for employment outside of town while also cutting into local production leading to job losses among those who had built everything previous including businesses like shipyards which continued operation until they closed down because there was no competition from larger railroad companies coming into town during this time periodvironing conditions changed forever after when railroads went out of business leaving only industry within town providing jobs for locals but unable to compete against larger companies making it difficult for these small businesses to keep up In 1881 local physician Dr Samuel Hodge founded what would become one ofthe largest hospitals inTuscaloosa County when he opened Gadsden Hospital south sideof downtownShoreline Road whore patients could come not just from surrounding counties but also neighboring Tuscaloosa City
