Gulf Shores, Alabama is a town located in the Decatur County, Alabama. The population of Gulf Shores was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Gulf Shores is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Decatur County. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 2,827. Gulf Shores was founded in 1887 by John A. Dixon as a landing place on Mobile Bay for steamboats carrying goods to and from New Orleans. The name came from nearby Shiawassee Bayou which empties into Mobile Bay overland and forms part of the border between Alabama and Mississippi. In 1902, when Highway 10 was routed through the area, Dixon donated land to make way for it; Gulf Shores became a hamlet on that parcel of land. In 1959, Gulf Shores became an incorporated town with its own government; it remains an unincorporated community today. At that time it had a population of 1,451 people; by 2000 it had grown to 3,711 citizens according to the 2010 Census count. The growth has been due in part to job opportunities in Decatur County which has seen heavy development since then; as well as new residents moving into Gulf Shores from other parts of Alabama and Mississippi during this period. In recent years there have been efforts made by local officials to improve access to public education in the community which has helped contribute to increased economic stability for residents hereabouts - something which will continue apace given how rapidly rural areas around Alabama are developing these days thanks largely to strong economic performance by small businesses and family farms along with governmental investment in infrastructure projects like Interstate 5 between Birmingham and Huntsville/Decatur counties
