Gulf Shores is a town in Baldwin County, Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1872 by James A. Gulf and his wife, Sarah Ann. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The town of Gulf Shores was founded on December 8, 1872 by James A. Gulf and his wife Sarah Ann after they were relocated from Mobile to Baldwin County because of the Panic of 1873. The first post office in Gulf Shores was established on January 3, 1875. In 1895 the name of the town changed to Biloxi due to trademark dispute with Biloxi, Mississippi which had been using the name for several years prior. In 1906 Gulf Shores became one of six towns incorporated as a city in Alabama under the provisions of Act No. 3334 (1906). This act provided for municipalities with a population over 10 thousand within five years to be granted city status upon passage by the state legislature; however, this ordinance did not take effect until 1907 when Biloxi repealed its ordinances allowing cities within their limits to become cities without having their funds derived from county property tax revenues instead (the city-county merger would occur two years later). On July 2nd 1920 while voting on whether or not to annex Beaumont into Gulf Shores voters rejected annexation by a margin of 54%-46%.
