The peak population was 3,500 in 1960 but dropped to 2,850 by 2000. The decline has been due to loss of jobs in manufacturing and other industries as well as suburban development near Interstate 5 and Birmingham's expanding city limits

Gulf Shores was founded in 1892 by pioneers who migrated from Mobile Bay. The first permanent settler in Gulf Shores was J.F. Davenport and his family who arrived in 1892 from Mobile Bay. He donated land for a post office, which was located onpresent day Court Street. The first store opened on October 8th, 1893 by Wm Hinson and His Sons as the "Davenport Store". In 1896, the Post Office moved to its present location on Third Street between Highway 99W and Highway 441A or US-72. In 1904, Mrs. Fannie Haralson donated land for a school which became known as Gulf Shore Elementary School.. The school building still stands today and serves as the Community Hall today. In 1915, Mrs Morrison donated land for a new courthouse which now stands across from Gulf Shore Elementary School on Second Street between Highway 99W and US-72 In 1916 Drumnall Crain also contributed land for a new courthouse which now stands across from Ocean Drive off of FourthStreet near Gadsden Mall There have been many expansion projects over time with expansions such as: A hospital (1962), an auto dealership (1986), multiple stores (1996), night life (2002) and more Today there are over 100 businesses that call Gulf Shores their home including restaurants such as White's BBQ & Grill serving up delicious food all day long; Aladdin's WahMbah Steak House where you can enjoy fresh seafood all day long; Demolition Man Toys - selling every kind of toy imaginable; BP gas station - providing gasoline and snacks to customers; Carpet Cleaners - coming to your house twice per week! All this and so much more makes it one of the most active communities in Jefferson County!
The town of Gulf Shores was founded by freed slaves in 1821. The first post office was established in Gulf Shores in 1826. In 1861, the Union Army invaded Alabama and captured Birmingham, which led to the Town of Gulf Shores becoming part of Confederate Alabama. The town surrendered on November 15, 1865, just days after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House.
