After years of effort by Mayor John Sibley, a charter was granted on December 11, 1868; it read: "That this community may be entitled to all the advantages which may be enjoyed by cities under common laws…And that no person having property within said limits shall be disqualified from voting or holding office." On January 5th 1870, voters approved an amendment making Gulfport an official city Limits without sending it to a vote again since there were only 2 citizens living within those limits at that time. The growth of mobile telephone service in the late 1990s caused competition among small towns and cities for business space alongAlabama's long coastline; consequently, Gulfport lost much of its businesses and population over time due to decreased access to good land and lower quality jobs available inland while phone companies grew more powerful outside those boundaries. However, new economic areas have begun developing around Interstate 10 east of Gulfport such as Cartersville and Phenix City which are magnets for development because they offer convenient access to high-speed internet connections (Majestic Connections), manufacturing plants (Aluminum Works Inc.), professional services (Hollywood Recruiting Solutions) and other industries not accessible from downtown Gulfport alone

However, by 1941 it had increased to 1000 people again due to the war and during World War II it increased to 1500 residents due to the influx of soldiers into the area from Alabama and Mississippi. During World War II there were also numerous munitions plants located in Gulf Shores which produced artillery shells and other weaponry for use in the war. In 1964, Stonington-based Lockheed Aircraft started production at their plant north of town; this led to an increase in businesses development around town as well as more tax revenue for Gulf Shore authorities. By 1990s however, local economy began slowing down due mainly to changes within politics and industry which have affected many westernAlabama communities since then

The population grew rapidly after World War II with servicemen and their families moving in and businesses opening up. During the 1960s and 1970s, many African Americans migrated from central Alabama to Gulf Shores; this led to increased crime rates among these immigrants which eventually dissipated over time. However, during the late 2000s and early 2010s there has been an increase in poverty among Gulf Shores residents due to a lack of job opportunities.
