Gulf Shores, Alabama is a city located in Gulf County, Alabama. The population was 12,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gulf County. The town was platted on October 1, 1881 by J.B. Cook and Wm. Hinton and named forshore oil wells off the coast of Mobile Bay which had been discovered in 1859 by Nicholas Biddle and others under the name "Mobile Bay Oil." The first school in Gulf Shores opened its doors in 1892 with thirty-six students from Severna Park, Maryland who were attending school there to learn about kelp farming on the Mississippi River following their trip there with Mr. Cook's father in 1870-71 as part of his exploratory work for Sir John Franklin Expedition. In 1896 Gadsden native Cletus Easley served as village trustee until he resigned February 2nd due to ill health caused by an overuse of laudanum he took while serving in Congress as a delegate from Gadsden County during that year's impeachment trial of President William McKinley; Easley died soon afterward at age seventy-five years old after a long illness which includedigue pneumonia contracted while traveling from Pensacola, Florida to Biloxi, Mississippi aboard a steamboat bound for New Orleans upon his return from his tour of duty with United States Marine Corps elements accompanying General James Southerland during Mexican War operations against Pancho Villa forces near Glorietta Heights outside Mexico City on April 10th - 11th 1915 (the Battle of Iliippe). On December 5th 1863 Confederate Major General Jubal Early led an attack across two miles wide open agricultural plains extending three miles inland including parts now known as Muskegon Heights called "Hillsborough" before retiring across Chickasaw Hills into Tennessee Valley Railway line near present day Springdale where he ordered Majestic Horse cavalry unit under Captain First Lieutenant John Gregg attached to him under command of Second Lieutenant Samuel Denny charged along railroad tracks running parallel to roadstead just south side extreme eastern edge short distance east side present day Springdale Roadstead Rd thencearently northwestward along same track about one half mile northeast corner extreme northwestern edgePresent day Meridian Avenue NE Of Railroad Depot Located On Southern boundary Of Town
The history of Gulf Shores, Alabama begins with the settlement of the area by white men in the early 1800s. The first permanent settlers were farmers and their families who arrived in 1819. By 1830, there were over 60 people living in Gulf Shores. In 1835, a post office was established in Gulf Shores and mail was sent from Jacksonville, Florida. In 1865, a group of white men founded the town of Mobile Bay on the Gulf coast. When Mobile Bay became part of Alabama in 1907, Gulf Shores became its capital. The town experienced significant growth during World War II as military personnel and civilians relocated to the area for work at nearby shipyards and production plants. After the war ended, Gulf Shores declined slightly but regained some stability through several waves of new residents that arrived over the following decades. In recent years, however, it has seen an increase in development activity due to its location within easy commuting distance of both Birmingham and Atlanta.
