Gulf Shores is located on US-1 and US-280 Business Loop. The first Europeans to visit Gulf Shores were the Spanish in 1795 during their exploratory journey through what is now Alabama. The French also visited in 1801 and 1802 before returning home to Louisiana. In 1814 the British occupied Mobile Bay and set up Fort Moselle in what is now Gulf Shores. They named it for Count Louis de Gulf (1768-1819), French ambassador to Spain who had been sent to survey Mobile Bay as part of an effort by King James IV to secure American independence from Great Britain. In 1836, when Tuscaloosa County was created from parts of Mobile County, Gulf Shores became its centerpiece because it was then the only incorporated community within that county boundaries. At that time there were no schools or other services available outside of Mobile or Huntsville, so people living near Gulf Shores built homes and businesses here until electric lighting replaced gas lightbulbs in 1928. The cotton industry began developing around this time as farmers bought large tracts of land along both US 1 and 280 Business Loop for cultivation; much of this land remains today within city limits. Today's economy revolves around service industries such as tourism and health care; with some major factories closed down over the years due to competition from China, India and other countries in Latin America. Most residents are white but there are minorities including black Americans (approximately 10 percent), Japanese Americans (six percent) and Latinos (eight percent). Most residents are English speakers but there are a few dozen varieties of Spanish spoken among local residents as well as Vietnamese immigrants who have settled since 1990s when they came after being given priority status under President George H W Bush's "Welcome Home Vietnam" program。
