The first school was opened in 1831 by Mr. Tatum’s daughter Sophia under teacher Mrs Stephenson as a one room log structure on what is now First Street just east of Third Avenue. In 1840, Miss Stephenson moved her school from her home on Second Street into a larger building that still stands today on US 1 (now US 301) just west of downtown GulfShore proper - giving rise to the nickname “Minstrel Town." The post office was established at Gulf Shores in 1832 by Wm Henson with mail being delivered by boat from Mobile until 1970 when USPS took over service across allAlabama counties including Monroe County In 1840 local resident James Crain donated land east of Third Avenue for a public square which became known later as USS Constitution Square after America's first successful naval vessel campaign against pirates off Cuba during the War Between1812-1814
