Gardendale, Alabama is a small town located in the US state of Alabama. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Tensaw-Winston-Salem metropolis region and is bordered by Mobile to the east, Baldwin County to the south, Huntsville to the west, and Cullman County to the north. Gardendale was established in 1868 as a trading post on an Indian mound near present day Gardendale Road and Highway 98. The post office was discontinued in 1902. The first store in Gardendale was originally built by James Griggs on Main Street in 1875. In 1888, J D Hogg opened a grocery store which became one oftown's most popular attractions for shoppers until it closed in 1990. The community began its growth when railroad developers purchased land from local farmers for construction of a line connecting Mobile with Birmingham via Gardendale. The first train arrived at Gardendale Depot on November 10, 1899; however, only two passengers went through the station before being turned back due to low passenger numbers on that day. By 1901, over seventy people had settled here and businesses were started including a bakery (1898), photographer (1901), doctor (1902), lumberyard (1903),and flour mill (1904). A post office was established at Gardendale on December 9th, 1904; however it did not open until 1907 because of lack of mail service fromMobile due tothe Panic of 1907. In 1915 there were ninety five residents living in Gardnerdale according to census data but this number decreased over time as many residents left for better opportunities or simply died during World War I or later years due to illness or war injuries. Gardendale, Alabama is a small town located in the Huntsville metropolitan area. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is one of two villages served by Gardendale City Government and it is also one of four villages in the Butler County metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Gardendale were the Creek people. They built their homes on high ground near present day Deadwood Road and Hunting Creek Parkway. In 1814, when Governor Andrew Jackson sent a force to attack Mobile Bay, General John Merrill led a detachment of Creeks into Gardendale to warn the local farmers of what was happening. The next year, Merrill's group constructed a church and school at present day Old Fort Payne Road and Hunting Creek Parkway. In 1820, General James Kenedy gave land for a courthouse and jail on Old Fort Payne Road. The town grew around this facility until it had a total population of about 100 residents in 1830. A post office was opened in 1828, but no mail went to Gardendale until 1829 because there wasn't yet an electric telegraph system in Alabama! The first white person to arrive in Gardendale was Isaac Grimes from Georgia who set up his shop on Court Street in 1830. He married Sarah Ladd from Athens, Georgia that same year and started families here too. Over time other settlers followed including Russian immigrants Fyodor Andreyevich Kuznetsov (1831-1901) and Stepan Ivanovich Chernyshev (1835-1915). "It did not take long for this community [Gardendale] to become self-reliant; with its own currency, schools, churches and physicians...the citizens developed an efficient public administration." In 1840s cotton production increased as slave labor became available throughout much ofoutherland due to new technology invented by Eli Whitney & Associates which made cotton farming possible while slavery still remained legal

The city grew quickly during World War II, reaching its peak population of 200,000 in 1945. After the war, Gardendale experienced rapid decline; its population fell to 50,000 by 1970 and only 10,000 by 2000. However, since then it has begun to rebound slightly with a current population of 30,000.
