Gardendale, Alabama was named after General James Gardiner in 1819. The community was founded on the west side of Mobile Bay and developed as a small fishing village. In 1872, the U.S. Army moved to Fort Gaines in nearby Baldwin County and began using Gardendale for its military garrison. In 1907, the United States Naval Observatory was established at Gardendale and it remained an active naval station until 1974 when it closed down due to budget cuts. However, the observatory left behind a legacy of scoping history that can be seen today at the United States Naval Observatory at Gardendale Museum. The first scopes were built in America by Dutchmen around 1640s and they were used primarily for hunting animals like deer and bear. By 1716, American telescopes had been built with various types of lenses including refractors which allowed objects near the sun to be easily perceived without having to wear a telescope cover or use a mirror to direct light onto an object close at hand. By 1800, British astronomers had begun building their own telescopes which allowed them to view celestial objects much further away than anyone else at that time. However, American astronomers continued building their own telescopes well into the 1800s due largely to financial reasons (some said because Americans believed that distance was not as important as accuracy).

Gardendale, Alabama is a census-designated place in Talladega County, Alabama. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hollywood–Talladega metropolitan area. Gardendale was founded in 1868 as a small farming community on the west side of Mobile Bayou. The first post office was established in 1870. The first store and blacksmith shop were built about 1/4 mile west of present day Gardendale Road. A general store and lumberyard were opened on the east side of Mobile Bayou about 1/2 mile north of present day Grady Street. In 1875, White's grocery store became the first department store in Gardendale when it opened along Grady Street between Court and Franklin Streets. By 1880, all businesses had been closed down by economic depression caused by cotton prices falling during Reconstruction years which made it difficult to compete with commercial establishments in nearby cities such as Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. In 1901, an elementary school was built adjacent to present day Park Elementary School across from Gardendale Baptist Church on Park Avenue North (now Grady Street). This school served grades kindergarten through 8th grade until 1959 when it merged with Springdale Elementary School to form Springdale Middle School which continued serving grades 9th through 12th grade until 2002 when it merged with Hoover High School to form Hoover High School Jr./Sr., also known as “Hoover Jr./Hoover Sr.–Gardendale” for short. The population peaked at 10,000 during World War II due to wartime demand for housing near military bases and other industrial plants operated by United States government agencies throughout southeastern Alabama including those located at Mobile Naval Base and Fort Union Arsenal outside of Mobile where thousands of African American soldiers processed after their discharge from service during the war years 1945-1949
