In 1912 local resident Anna Louise Rankin organized a group called "A Better Future League" to promote social welfare issues in Mobile County through education and agitation with the goal of achieving racial equality within African Americans as well as improving working conditions for white people who were employed therein by%. Eventually this organization evolved into the National Association for Colored People (NACP) which began its work grew active throughout America promoting civil rights opportunities for black Americans starting with voter registration drives in 1943 under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program
