Gardendale was founded in 1878 by John and Anna Gardendale. The family built a sawmill on the present site of the city in 1878. In 1886, they added a blacksmith shop, which became the first African American business in Gardendale. In 1907, they erected a frame courthouse and Records Building. The city's first library was opened in 1934 by Mrs. Lillie Broughton Armstrong, daughter of Mayor J.B. Armstrong.
