The town was founded in 1868 by immigrants from Ireland and Italy. The first post office was established in Gardendale on October 12, 1868. The name of the town comes from a bend in the River Flint which ran through it. Gardendale has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa), with warm to hot summers and mild to cool winters. Average monthly temperatures range from 41–49 degrees F (5–13 degrees C). In summertime, thunderstorms are common; however, they are not very intense or frequent. Winters are severe with often cold weather nights and periods of high wind speeds that can cause power outages during winter storms. Gardendale's economy depends largely on agriculture and manufacturing operations within the limits of its community including textiles, automobiles, food processing and shipping businesses as well as services such as accounting, engineering and other professional services

Today there is little evidence remaining that once constituted an important commercial center for south central Alabama during the 19th century
Gardendale was one of the first towns in Alabama. It was founded on October 21, 1819 by Captain John Pemberton and his wife Anna Comstock. The town developed around a small creek that flows through it. In 1824, Gardendale became a county seat and it remained so until 1935.
