Gardendale, Alabama is a small town located in Butler County, Alabama. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Butler County by population and the second-largest city in the county. The official name of Gardendale is "Theopolis." The history of Gardendale goes back to 1835 when it was known as "Caldwell". In that year, John Caldwell donated land to build a courthouse and jail. The town was renamed after him in 1837. By 1840, the population had grown to 100 people and it became a railroad stop on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. In 1859, Gardnerville was developed as an agricultural center with several stores, churches, schools and barns. In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg's army captured Gardendale while they were retreating from Chattanooga across Tennessee Valley soilaynagrass fields towards Lynchburg Junction in Virginia. The Union forces burned most of Gardnerville before returning home minus their cannons which they had taken into action at nearby Lookout Mountain nine days earlier against both Confederate General Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and General George McClellan's Army of Potomac River Crossing under logistical supervision from corps commander MajGen Ulysses S Grant at Manassas Junction near Richmond Va., Stuart having been ordered by Grant not to cross over any bridges without orders from Union commandant Gen Hullin (the entire infantry brigade under Brigadier General James Longstreet)). This event remains one of historys seminal episodes; one source says that it has led ultimately to more than 50% black enrollment at local colleges in central Alabama since Reconstruction began.. In 1865 Garland Auld (1821-1910), son of Scottish immigrants Rev Alexander Garland Auld (1784-1864) founded what would become known as First Baptist Church hereabouts on what is now Second Street east of Center Avenue North; baptizing first African American converts there early “Garlandites” classed together with free white Baptists who replied then & there thereto called themselves “First Colored Baptist Church” hereafter until disaffiliation effective Aug 1st 1870 when church moved thence uptown into new building erected following fire Dec 1863 – this site being selected for its commanding view across open vallee aforesaid & prospects thereof looked good by lotteries announced Sep 12th 1870 so soon after Land grant for same befel distributed thru Montgomery Judge H Sessions etc.– membership grows rapidly optic tho lack cf pastor busy with public duties numerous itinerants among them preachters– during 1880s parsonage erected adjacent also (& used till 1906) by Mrs W Fenton (widow & daughter cf Rev Jno Pritchard [1820-1906]), widow & daughter cf Rev Geo W Fenton [1867-1946]) couple Episcopalians pastorate here meanwhile until 1903 when former First Baptist Church closed down due largely to increase in interracial mixing among congregants leading some members thenceforth affiliated wit Second Presbyterian EpiscopalChurch whose pastors later constituted separate congregationSeparate CongregationalChurch organized Oct 9th 1903 w/ Mr Charles Dennison [1868-1949] as first Pastor

The town was first settled in 1819 by John Gardendale and his family. The current courthouse date back to 1928. Gardendale is located on the east side ofAlabama between I-565 and US-29/Baldwin Street near the Birmingham–Jefferson County line. It lies just off of State Route 9W which leads south to Birmingham and north to Mobile Bayou. According to the 2010 census, Gardendale has a total area of , all land. The only watercourse within its limits are Baldwinsville Creek on the west side and Guntersville Creek on the east side. A post office called Gardendale was established in 1819, but it never functioned due to lack of mail service from nearbyMobile Bayou; it reverted to its original name in 1924. In 1870, Gardendale had a population of 209 people; by 1910 that number had increased to 6,365 as a result of cotton farming and other economic development around Gardendale during that time period.

Gardendale has been inhabited for over three hundred years and is one of the oldest towns in Marshall County. Gardendale was called by various names including Cedar Grove, Arlington Heights, and Sandy Bottom before its current name was given to it by General John C. Frémont in 1838. After serving as a military post for several years, Fort de la Motte was built there in 1846 by Colonel James McAllister. In 1853 Fort Gratiot was founded nearby and served as a frontier outpost until it surrendered to Confederate forces on April 12, 1865. During the American Civil War, Gardnerdale was an important Union military post due to its location near Mobile Bay and its access to transportation links with Chattanooga and Atlanta. On September 4th 1861 General Bragg's army began their campaign against Confederate General Robert E Jones's force at Lookout Mountain north of Gardendale. At first artillery fire from Fort Gratiot helped support Jones's troops but soon enough batteries were brought up from Mobile Point and additional riflemen were employed to harass the Confederates as they retreated back across Mobile Bay towards Chattanooga. The battle ended late on September 5th when Jones withdrew his force after suffering heavy casualties; Gardnerdale remained loyal to the Union cause throughout the war. Today Gardnerdale remains a small community with many residents working in adjacent communities within Marshall County or outside ofAlabama altogether due to its limited resources locally speaking most people are farmers or ranchers who rely largely on hunting and fishing opportunities available within radius
