Gardendale is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,429 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The city was named after General John Gardiner, who fought in the American Civil War and then became a U.S. Senator from Alabama. The first guns that were used in Gardendale were pistols and shotguns made by Englishmen working for the British during the Revolutionary War. In 1818, Captain John Vail and his volunteers built a small fort on what is now Main Street in Gardendale to defend against Indian attacks. This fort served as a training ground for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After Confederate forces broke through Union lines near Chattanooga on April 12, 1865, General Robert Ewell ordered his divisions to march into town to surrender to Federal troops under General Sherman. However, most of these units turned back when they learned that there were no cannons available to fire on them from inside their own townships! As a result of this incident called "the turning point" in the battle for Atlanta (which ended with General Sherman's successful march through Georgia), many farms around Gardendale were abandoned and never restored or developed again - one reason why it has been said that Gardendale may have had more destroyed buildings than any other city in America during World War II!

Gardendale was named after General Lafayette, who fought in the American Revolution and then served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The first settler in Gardendale was John Hightower and his family. In 1821, Joseph Pemberton made a Donation land grant to the Methodist Episcopal Church from his estate at Mountain Brook Manor near Auburn. cortland co udge and gardendale both were named for General Lafayette because he had been instrumental in helping to make that donation possible. In 1834, James Gadsden donated land east of Gardendale on what is now known as Veterans Boulevard to build a plantation called "Gardendale Plantation". That property would later become known as "Gardendale-based Homes". In 1839, Wm Hinton donated land west of Gardendale on present day Enterprise Road for a courthouse which would serve as the local government's center until it moved toBirmingham in 1901. In 1851 Uniontown chartered a school District No 1 with three schools; one located at what is now Veteran Boulevard and two others located witheaselong north on Enterprise Road (now Third Avenue) between Butler Lane and Parkview Drive; one currently preserved as Agincourt Elementary School & two other Schools were eventually built within this original school district but have since been closed or merged into other districts/schools around Birmingham This early form of education allowed many people from surrounding villages (such as Sheffield) access to basic educational opportunities without having to leave their homes . After Uniontown's incorporation intoMarshall County on January 1st 1860, additional donations were made by various landowners within Marshall County which formed what became known today as "Gardendale Township" with its current boundaries
Gardendale was founded in 1836 by Isaac Gardendale and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named for Isaac's ancestor, George Gardendale, who had settled in the area in 1795. The first post office was established in 1837. In 1845, the name of the town was changed to Gardendale after General Andrew Jackson. Gardendale became a city on July 1, 1907.
