The first mention of Gardendale dates back to 1827 when General James Wilkinson discovered land in this area and named it for his friend and fellow officer John Gardiner. The community rapidly grew with the arrival of agricultural settlers in the late 19th century who developed a wide variety of crops including cotton, hay and corn. One early resident was Drumnall McIntosh who served as an physician to Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. By 1920, much of what is now Gardendale had been organized into a single village comprising 10 blocks or “villages” which were further divided into two sets of villages each (north/south). Each set included one commercial block that acted as its centerpiece flanked by residential blocks on either side. In 1928, following passage of the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA), which provided subsidies to farmers throughout America, village leaders decided to become self-sufficient by initiating some type of marketing program that would allow them to sell their produce directly to consumers within their own communities rather than shipping it all over nation-wide markets like Cincinnati or Nashville. This initiative became known as "Gardendale's First Commercial Program" and helped make Gardendale an important player in community life until recently when Interstate 65 cut through town making it difficult for residents to access many amenities such as grocery stores and schools (the closest high school being located about 25 miles away in Hoover). After the war, Gardendale became an important center for cotton production. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down Gardendale's courthouse and many homes in the town. Despite this attack, Gardnerdale remained an important Confederate stronghold until its surrender on April 9th of that year.
