Gardendale, Alabama is a small town in the southern section of Birmingham, Alabama. The population was 7,395 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Gardendale has a history dating back to 1892 when it was founded as a sawmill town by settlers from Georgia and Mississippi. The industry that gave Gardendale its name died out in the early 20th century but it regained some prominence during World War II as a munitions plant. The plant closed in the late 1960s and Gardendale gradually lost its population to suburbanization and other economic factors. However, over the last few decades Gardendale has seen growth as an educational community with several high schools, two churches, and one post office located there. Today, Gardendale is an agricultural community with a large number of farm animals including pigs, chickens, cows, horses, sheep/goats, soybeans (a key crop), potatoes (a mainstay of food production), cottonseed oil/, corn syrup/, peanut butter/, tree nuts/, applesauce/and many more products that are used by locals and businesses alike. The first inhabitants of what would become Gardendale were poor white farmers who came to this area specifically because of its fertile soil which could be turned into farmland. By 1892 there were only six residents living in what is now Gardnerdale; four men and two women who farmed land around Hopkins Ferry Dam on White River northwest of present day Gardnerdale. In 1900 only three people lived here; one man working for his brother-in-law as a laborer on their farmstead just east of Hopkins Ferry Dam bridge north of present day Gardnerdale Elementary School; one woman boarding with her sister-in-law on their farm near Church Road northeast of present day Gardnerdale Elementary School; one family whose son-in-law had married into another family’s farm about five miles south west from here near White River Valley Hospital southwest corner Old Blackman Highway east side today's Atmore Avenue between Big Rock Road (now Pinson Parkway) Iba Street southeast corner Turner Road). All these people grew crops such as tobacco (which still remains an important crop in this rural community), rice (a mainstay diet for many residents today), peas (a staple food for chicken feeders/poultry factories throughout much of central Alabama today), potatoes etc., made baskets or dishes out OF THE EARTH using local wild plants gathered locally or bought from traders along Turkey Creek or other nearby waterways where they sold their produce caught from numerous species including: redbud trees found uproots year round along creek banks within 10 feet diameter packabundas reaching 100 feet tall off deep water areas weig ht 8 1/2 feet 6 inches). From these beginnings until well after World War II there was no middle class development taking place here save those born into wealthy families either coming through Hopkins Ferry Dam or moving downriver via other means to settle down near Birmingham proper although some did find success vending groceries door to door throughout Barberton County selling various types items such as candy bars cigarettes chewing gum etc.; housing developments began popping up all over central Alabama soon after World War II among inner city blacks brought over by white flight following Disasters like King Cotton Strike thru desegregation while most white middle class retirees continued living outside cities limits until well into the 1990s when both inner city black & white flight increased dramatically due to changing social norms & economics

Gardendale is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 809 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Gardendale appears to be in 1822 when John Stuart said "There are two places called Gardendale and they are both on the confines of Montgomery County." By 1830, Gardendale had 6 residents and was located between Decatur and Hoover. In 1834, the post office was moved from Decatur to Gardendale due to its growing population. In 1836, there were 11 residents in Gardendale and it had a schoolhouse which served as a social center for the area. In 1840, there were 14 residents in Gardendale and it had 2 stores, 1 blacksmith shop and 1 physician. In 1845-46 (the year before Alabama became an state), there were 16 residents in Gardnerville; this number increased to 28 by 1850 due to natural increase. From 1850-1851 (the year before Reconstruction began), Gardnerville had 4 churches with a total attendance of 340 people; this number increased again to 5 by 1860 when 3 new churches were built. A post office was established at Gardnerville on January 10, 1861, under the name of Montevallo Prairie Station Post Office. That same year saw an influx of settlers into what would become Gardendale due to railroad construction through that section of Montgomery County – many coming from Mobile Bayou region near New Orleans where cotton plantations operated side by side with sugarcane plantations weeks/months/years later after Louisiana seceded from Mexico following their purchase from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Civil War
Gardendale was founded by James Gardiner in 1819. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Alabama Railroad in 1830 and soon became a hub for cotton production. The town's population peaked at over 10,000 in the 1840s, but declined during the Civil War due to its proximity to Confederate Camp Butler. Despite this setback, Gardendale continued to grow steadily until it reached its current size within the last two decades.
