Gardendale, Alabama was founded in 1819. It was the first town in Mobile County and the first courthouse in Alabama.
Gardendale is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Gardendale were Frenchmen and Native Americans who founded an Indian trading post in 1795. From here they traded with the Seminole Indians and other Native American groups for goods such as corn, deer meat, turtle eggs, and hides. In 1819 Gardendale was platted as a town by John Crouch and others on land granted to him by General Andrew Jackson. The town was named after General Lafayette's birthplace in France—Aubigny-sur-Sarthe—and its original site included a mansion built by Judge Samuel Maynard Barton. In 1825 the first store was opened in Gardendale when James Witherspoon bought land from John Hance for $1 per acre. By 1830 there were twelve stores in Gardendale with a population of over 350 people. A school was started in 1829 but disbanded due to lack of students; it reopened under new management two years later under the name of "Gardener's School." The first transportation through Gardendale came when horse teams brought cargo to local farmers between 1800 and 1840; however, wagon traffic increased when roads were built connecting nearby towns during the late 1800s. One early settler, Jeptha Sayers, built one of Mobile’s earliest businesses--a pharmacy--on his property east of present day Interstate 10 next to what is now known as Second Baptist Church (later First Baptist). Sayers also constructed several homes which stand today within sight of Railroad Street east of downtown Gardendale. A post office called "Gardener" was established at this location on July 2, 1836; it served until December 3rd, 1861 (). On November 5th 1861 Union general Robert Ewell ordered all Confederate forces south of Selma to assemble at that city for an effort led by Maj.-Gen.(Ulysses S.) Grant against ConfederateGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest's army under Jubal Early that had invaded Alabama from Georgia the previous month: unknown why Gardnerdale escaped notice (), but likely because its residents did not support secession or support any military action inside their own community

Gardendale was founded in 1836 by James Gardendale and his wife, Anna. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson’s home of Yorktown. The community rapidly grew due to its location on the Alabama River and its natural resources. In 1868, Gardendale became a city and remained so until 1974. The first settlers in Gardendale were farmers who arrived in 1836. By 1840, the town had a population of 50 people. In 1868, Gardendale became a city thanks to the efforts of mayor Clements Waddell and councilman Atherton Pritchett. The city enjoyed success until 1974 when it merged with Huntsville to form the current municipality of Huntsville-Gardendale.
Gardendale was founded in 1838 by Captain John Gardendale, who named it for his father-in-law, General William Selma. The town grew quickly and soon had two stores, a blacksmith shop, and a post office. In 1849, the first white school was built in Gardendale. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1860 there were ten stores, sixteen homes, and a jail. In 1861, the first courthouse was built in Gardendale and the town became an incorporated municipality. By 1870, the population of Gardendale had increased to over 100 people. In 1892, the first electric light came to Gardendale and by 1903 there were five electric lights in the town. In 1928, the last gasoline engine used in Gardendale was replaced by an electric motor. The town passed through several changes during its history including becoming an all-black community in 1955; being annexed into Birmingham by 1968; becoming a majority Hispanic community in 1984; becoming an all-white community again in 1995; and passing through another change when it became part of Montgomery County on January 1st 2001
