They built a log cabin on the banks of the Chickasaw River. The area around Gardendale was later called Rossville because of the presence of this cabin. In 1827, Captain John Ross donated land to the town for its incorporation. In 1828, Reverend James Murtagh officiated at the first Baptist service in Gardendale. By 1850, there were over fifty residents in Gardendale. The town experienced growth during the Civil War as soldiers fought along side General John Custer and other Unionists against Confederate forces. After the war, many people left Gardendale for new opportunities or moved away from town altogether due to economic reasons. However, some remained in Gardnerstown until their death in 1903. During World War II, many members of the local military served in overseas theaters of war and developed strong ties with their hometowns back home. Today, Gardnerstown contains a small but active community that celebrates its history and heritage every year during Fourth of July weekends
