Gardendale, Alabama is a small town in the counties of Butler and Pickens located in the state of Alabama. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Mobile metropolitan area. Gardendale was founded in 1868 by J.M. Gardener as a station on what is now U.S. Route 9W betweenMobile and Muscle Shoals and became a community after being approved by the United States Post Office Department as a mail stop on November 12, 1868 (1). In 1932, it lost its post office status but continued to serve as an agricultural center with properties such as oil wells, chicken farms, cotton plantations and other land holdings that were later developed into suburbs of Mobile or Birmingham (2). The first reference to Gardendale comes from Whiteville Memoirs which records that “Jedediah Gardner purchased 100 acres of upland near this place about 1828” (3). There are no contemporary sources that provide information about who Jedediah Gardner was or what he did for his money. However, it is clear from history books that he had some kind of business acumen because within a few years he had organized several businesses in Gardendale including one dealing in flour and feed products (4). By 1830 Jedediah Gardner had also formed a company to purchase slaves called The Gartners & Company which would eventually become known as Booker T Washington & Co Incorporated (5). As time passed more residents moved into Gardendale so there was never really enough space for them all together until development started around 1950-1951 when lots were sold off along US 9W creating current day Gardendale Avenue which runs through the heart of the town center flanked by homes on one side and businesses on the other (6). There have been many changes to Gardendale over the years including annexations surrounding it during various wars such as World War II when much housing was needed for military personnel stationed here; an event that has been dubbed "The Great Migration" where black Americans moving westward took jobs available here; changing demographics with more white people moving into central Alabama beginning in the late 1960s; technological advances having an impact on how people shop, work and entertain themselves today with online shopping becoming increasingly popular; cultural changes brought about by things like MTV playingabbaity la la land here while still others happening outside of municipal control such as Wal-Mart opening up store locations here starting back in 1990; major events like Hurricane Katrina hitting coastal areas resulting in significant damage done to homes, businesses and infrastructure here – most recently thanks to recent flooding however those effects are slowly healing with hopes for future economic growth both inside and outside of town center (7) . Overall there has been significant changeover over time at Gardendale which can be seen across almost every facet imaginable from its founding until today – something that makes it unique among communities throughout America.
