The town became known as "The Confederacy's Forts". After the war ended, many businesses closed down and people left Gadsdensville for better opportunities elsewhere. Today, Gadsden is still home to a few small businesses and some homes that remain from when it was one of the most vibrant communities in Alabama
The name Gadsden is derived from the Creek words Gad and denn, meaning "county of the hare." The town was founded in 1819 by General John Walker, who named it for George Washington. The first post office in Gadsden was established in 1827. The town has grown significantly since then, and today it has a population of over 50,000. Gadsden is located on the Alabama River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Birmingham. It is bordered to the east by Hoover County and to the west by Stroud County. In 1827, Gadsdens first post office was established under the name "Newbern." By 1830, however, most people here had abandoned Newbern because they thought it too close to Birmingham. So Walker renamed Gadsden again - this time using the Creek word gad or denn which meant "county of hounds" or "districts extending along a stream," both significant locales at that time. In 1840-41 when Battle Cry Redeemed took place between Confederate forces led by General Robert Ewell and Union troops commanded by Major General Andrew Johnson near Hoover Dam on Moccasin Bend River north-east of present day Gadsden], many residents deserted Johnson's side and chose instead to fight with Ewell as part of what became known as "the Confederate Invasion". Although outnumbered numerically and outgunned virtually throughout battle, these brave men fought with valor until finally surrendering morning dawn on April 9th; their example inspired future Union soldiers marching into battle against more experienced Confederates later that year. This event helped spur development in nearby areas such as Tuscaloosa and Fairhope where soon businesses were popping up all around Hearst's store!
