Gadsden, Alabama (population: 25,000) is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The city was founded in 1819 and named for General Andrew Jackson. Gadsden became a center of cotton production after the American Civil War. After years of decline as a manufacturing town, Gadsden has emerged as a cultural and commercial center in recent decades. The city is home to the University ofSouthernAlabama and several professional sports teams, including the Alabama Crimson Tide football team and the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.

Gadsden is located at 33 degrees latitude and 85 degrees longitude, making it one of the most northerly cities in the United States. The city is known for its cotton plantations that were once some of the largest in America.
The town of Gadsden was founded in 1821 by Captain John C. Gadsden, a Confederate officer who had fought in the War of 1812. The town gradually grew and became an important commercial center in southern Alabama. In 1865, Gadsden was the site of one of the largest battles of the Civil War, when Union troops attempted to drive Confederate forces from their positions around Mobile Bay. The battle lasted almost three hours and resulted in more than 200 casualties on both sides.
