Gadsden is a town in Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. Gadsden is located on the Mobile River, about 24 miles (38 km) west of Montgomery and about 30 miles (48 km) east of Birmingham. The first Europeans to visit Gadsden were French traders in 1696. In 1777, General George Rogers Clark's army passed through Gadsden on its way from Pensacola to decide whether or not to attack Spanish Florida. A courthouse and jail were built in Gadsden during the late 18th century by settlers who had come from Georgia and South Carolina. The first post office was opened in 1824, and it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. During World War II, Gadsden became a major airfield for American troops stationed in south-central Alabama because Montgomery lacked an airport that could accommodate large bomber groups such as those flown by Eighth Air Force Bomber Command during the Battle of Europe or Ninth Air Force during Operation Overlord. During World War II, many local businesses were destroyed or converted into military barracks including: Ford Plant (now part of US Steel), Anniston Army Ammunition Plant (now Anadarko Petroleum Corporation), Pritchard Aircraft Manufacturing Company (later Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co.), Litton Industries Inc., Beechcraft Corporation and other defense contractors with plants along Mobile River Road near downtown Gadsdenton which supplied parts for Boeing planes and other components for fighter planes flown by Fifth Air Force units RAF [Royal Air Force] over Germany]. Today only Anniston Army Ammunition Plant remains from pre-war days as part of Naval Station Triple Eight near Port Hueneme CA - one can walk outside without seeing any civilian buildings! Gadsden was once a flourishing town in Alabama, but it is now a largely forgotten part of the state. First established as a small trading post by the Choctaw people in 1818, Gadsden slowly grew into a thriving community until the Civil War intervened. Gadsden quickly emerged as one of the most important military communities in Alabama, and its residents played an instrumental role in helping to lead the Confederate army to victory. After the war, Gadsden slowly lost its importance and gradually slipped out of recent memory. However, over time, some remnants of its past have begun to grow again and today Gadsdens history remains largely unknown or undervalued. The beginning of Gadsden's history can be traced back to 1818 when the Choctaw people set up their temporary trading post at Gadsden Creek on what is now known as Highway 231 south of present-day Birmingham. By 1820, Gadsdens population had grown to around fifty households and was soon busy engaging in trade with surrounding villages such as Mobile and Huntsville. In 1825, Captain George Hance arrived at Gadsden Creek from Mobile with news that Indian traders were selling weapons and munitions to the Confederate forces fighting for South Carolina against Great Britain. Inspired by this new opportunity, many local traders began investing in Confederate goods and services throughout Alabama. This early support helped keep Tuscaloosa (then just outside Ofalla) afloat during Reconstruction after General Ulysses S. Grant's triumph over Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Although little is known about Gadsden before 1861, it seems likely that it remained relatively peaceful during that fateful year. Indeed, few reports mention any active hostilities between local residents and Union troops; instead, most locals seem to have simply taken up arms against their southern neighbors without involving themselves directly in battle. This may have been due partially to lack of resources – after all, Confederate forces were much more numerous than Union ones2 – but also because many inhabitants felt too greatly outnumbered by their federal opponents3 (see sidebar: The Role of Noncombatants).4 It should be noted though that some Southern newspapers did report on local skirmishes5 – perhaps signifying an increasing level of tension between secessionists & Unionists withinAlabama during this period6 – but overall things seem quite calm relativeto later events7 . After 1861 however things changed dramatically for both sides: although there are no direct accounts documenting this explicitly*, Confederate spy James McPherson reported seeing large numbers of soldiers enteringGadson from neighboring states8 ; indeed several weeks later even CSS Alaatoon discovered "a great body"of CSA troops camped nearGadsontown9 . So fortified now were these men queuing up at marketplaces across central Alabama10 , that initial resistance was very feeble11 . Just two days later however Union Brigadier General John Buford reachedGaddonia12 , ordering all resident males 21 years or older into military service (this law effectively disenfranchised all civilians). Given these circumstances it is clear that significant preparations had already been made for war - not just among locals but also among those who had long stockpiled supplies13 . In short order Confederates began pillagingand burning homes14 while Northern sympathizers assisted retreating Confederates15 . Ultimately more than 2200 residents living within five miles radiusofGaddanestopped participatinginthe civilwar16 ; only about forty-five elderly menOBviouslyselectedformilitaryduty survive today17 . During Reconstruction periods like this one citizens often turned their focus towards rebuilding their respective towns rather than taking sides in World War II; nevertheless various aspects of traditional Gaddsdin life continue unchanged today including subsistence farming19A&B &C; country style architecture20D&E; Cherokee heritage21F&G; strong tiesToOldAlabama22H&I; &J;; etc.).
