The area that now makes up Gadsden was first settled by the Creek Native American tribe in the late 18th century. After years of fighting with other tribes, they were finally forced out of their land in 1794 by General Andrew Jackson as part of his war against Indian resistance. Afterward, many Creek people moved into what is now Gadsden County and began growing cotton crops for export to Spain and England. In 1814, General Jackson's army burned down some abandoned buildings in what is now downtown Gadsdens commercial district to clear land for new development. In 1840, when Congress decided to annex most of Alabama into the United States on July 4th following the Mexican-American War, Gadsden became one of the few Confederate cities within our borders (the others being Selma). Despite this factionalism within our community - which continues today - most residents supported secession during the Civil War because they felt it was an important issue for their home state: "We had no choice but to stand by our cause" says one resident from that time period.“What We Knew About Birmingham & Other Southern Towns That Joined Confederacy” It wasn't until 1862 when Union forces besieged Mobile Bay that Confederate General Jubal Early declared himself President pro tempore of all Georgia.
