Gadsden, Alabama is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,565 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. Gadsden was founded by General John C. Butler on December 12, 1819 as Greeneville Township in what is now Jefferson County. When Butler's army invaded Mobile Bay in 1861 to liberate Montgomery from Confederate rule, he chose Gadsden as his headquarters and began planning for the city's incorporation intoAlabama when that territory became statehood on February 14, 1867. The first settler in Gadsden was Benjy Page who arrived in 1826 with his family from Easton, Pennsylvania. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Tennessee River where he named it "Greeneville." After some years Page moved to a site on White Street near today's Purdy Park after finding land there available for purchase at low prices through an agent of Senator James Kenedy of Mobile who represented western Alabama interests during the federalist period of Alabama statehood negotiations.
