In 1824 general Jackson built a log cabin on what is now Main Street for his own use as headquarters during his tour through Shelby County looking for new lands to purchase from Chief Justice John Marshall’s Cherokee nation holdings west of Mobile Bayou (present day Montgomery). In 1927 historian Cotton Mather wrote about “the pioneer citizens [of] this little village” who had helped found Birmingham and were “pioneers even more so here than there among us Yankees; they are buried where their homes once stood; but our lives have been passed away with them since they left us - living only in memory” (Mather 1923). Many members of Mr./Mrs./Children's United Methodist Church still attend services today within walking distance of their original building at 5226 Park Ave., which served as both church and school until 1968 when it burned down due to neglect by local officials (Schmidt 2011).
