Fort Payne was a Confederate fort built in the early 1860s on the banks of the Alabama River. The fort served as a stronghold for Confederate forces during the Civil War, and it also played an important role in the development of post-war Birmingham, Alabama. The first settlers in what is now Fort Payne were white men who arrived in 1818. The fort was constructed by Federal General James Ewell to protect Mobile Bay from Union forces. In 1861, after Confederate troops captured Mobile, Ewell decided to build a fortified enclave within his own army to provide additional protection against possible Union attack. The fort was completed by late 1861 and became operational that fall. It was not long before Confederate forces began using Fort Payne as their primary military objective within Mobile County. In February 1863, Union General Ulysses S. Grant landed at Fort Pillow on Mobile Bay and begin his campaign against the Confederacy. After weeks of skirmishing and combat, Union forces reached Fort Payne on May 10th. During this time, few civilian casualties resulted from Union shelling of the fort; however, several soldiers were killed or wounded inside theFort (including one general).
