When the first Americans arrived in Fort Payne in 1836, they were met with hostility from the local Native American population. The first metal holster made in Fort Payne was an infantry leather belt Holster developed by Lt. Colonel John L. Geary of the 3rd Battalion, 17th Regiment Mississippi Volunteers on December 4, 1877.

The fort was destroyed by fire in 1904, but was rebuilt and serves as a museum today. Fort Payne was a post on the Roanoke River in present-day Fort Payne, Alabama, during the American Revolution. The fort was built by Governor John Sevier and his brother, Lt. Gov. James Sevier, in 1792 to protect the area from British attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1802 after aBritish attack that destroyed much of the fortifications. The first European settlers in what is now Fort Payne were French Huguenots who arrived in 1765. In 1786, Major General Hugh Mercer built a small log cabin near what is now Fort Payne as part of his defenses against Indian attacks. From this cabin, Major General Mercer reported to President George Washington that he had sent five hundred men and two cannons to help defend Mobile Bay against possible British attack. In 1801, Colonel Isaac Watts purchased land at what is now Fort Payne from Captain Thomas Carmody for $1,000 cash; Watts intended to build a military post there with artillery and stores for local residents and militiamen who could provide defense against any future British incursions into Mobile Bay or east Alabama. However, no construction began until 1802 when British forces attacked the fortification and destroyed most of it including the original log building which became known as "theatherine." During the Revolution, many soldiers from nearbyMobile County enlisted in army service and some lived or worked at Fort Payne; these soldiers are sometimes mentioned in history texts without giving more information about their lives at this location or about their experiences at Roanoke Island where they fought beside General John Forbes's brigade during its campaign against Lieutenant Governor James Sevier's militia force on December 15-16th). Some of these soldiers returned home after the war while others stayed behind to help build newforts such as Mobile County Courthouse (1805) and City Hall (1812/13), both located today within walking distance of Ft Payne State Park. After independence was achieved on July 4th of 1814 by US Bank hands over $5 million worth of gold coins found atop Spanish Hill outside Montgomeryville,[1] Ft Payne became an important garrison town surrounding newly minted Alabama statehood under US Constitution Article IV section 3a which vested state sovereignty over all its territory east of Birminghams 6 miles limit.[2][3] At least one animal raised here before 1800 may have been donkey

After its evacuation, the fort became abandoned and is now a National Historic Landmark located within the city limits of Mobile
