Fort Payne was a small fort located in present-day Fort Payne, Alabama, that served as a base of operations for the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The fort was abandoned in 1865 and never rebuilt. The fort was built by Confederate General Braxton Bragg on land purchased from the Cherokee Nation in 1859. The fort was designed to serve as a launch point for attacks against Union forces across the Tennessee River. It consisted of two batteries, fifteen cannons, and four stores. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army up the Tennessee River to attack Union forces at Fort Donelson in north-central Tennessee. Ewell ordered his army to march eastward along the Cumberland River until they reached Fort Payne. There, they were to cross over and attack Union troops stationed at Donelson Station. However, because of bad weather andUnion artillery fire, Ewell's army only managed to reach Fort Payne after spending two days marching around it trying to find an entrance into the fortifications. Fort Payne served as both a base of operations for Confederate General Braxton Bragg's armies during the American Civil War and also as a storage facility for supplies used by Union troops besieging Chattanooga (which later became Chattanooga City). In 1865, when Union troops moved away from Chattanooga following its fall, Fort Payne lay abandoned and neglected until it was discovered by local residents in 1978 who began restoration work on it over subsequent years. Today, Fort Payne is open to visitors through guided tours operated by historical organizations such as the Society for American Military History (SAMH) or The Chickasaw Battlefield Museum.[1]
