Fort Payne, Alabama was founded in 1827 as a military post on the Mobile River. The fort served as an arsenal and later as a base for the Confederate army during the American Civil War. In 1865, Fort Payne was surrendered by Union forces to Confederate troops. It was renamed from its original name of Mobile fortress after the city of Mobile, Alabama, which it served as a garrison for several years. The fort is now operated by the National Park Service as part of Mobile National Historical Park. In 1867, Fort Payne became home to the first African American ever stationed in a U.S military post when Colonel James A. Garfield arrived at the fort as counselor to Assistant Secretary of War John C. Breckinridge. The black soldier named General George Armstrong Custer had been killed in action at Battle Of Little Big Horn two years earlier and his body lay rotting in northern Montana until it was discovered and brought back to Fort Payne where he was buried with full honors in 1869. During World War II, Fort Payne played an important role in providing logistical support for Operation Overlord by housing Allied units over winter while they prepared for their assault on Nazi Germany. After hostilities ended, many of these buildings were used for storage or demolished but one brick building still stands today - the Stoneman Unit Headquarters building which housed command and control operations for all Allied units during Operation Neptune's Spear-the largest amphibious land operation ever mounted by United States Forces Europe (USFET). Today, Fort Payne is home to several museums including: The History Museum; Military History Museum; Marine Corps Museum; Black Soldiers' Memorial Museum; and Cherokee Indian artifacts museum among others
