The museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm, and admission is free. The museum has exhibits on guns, ammunition, target shooting, and more. Founded in 1906 by Major General W. T. Sherman, the fort was built as a training ground for Army officers and their troops during World War I. After the war, the fort was used as a garrison until it was closed in 1954. In 1967, the fort was sold to the city of Fort Payne and became an annex to the city’s cultural center. The gun target history museum opened in 1974 as part of the cultural center’s expansion into what would later become downtown Fort Payne. The Gun Target History Museum contains a variety of firearms and ammunition targets that date back to 1887 when George Hargrave designed and built his first iron rifle target at his home in Mobile County. Over time, targets have been made with materials such as wood or plastic; however, all steel targets are still displayed today at the museum.
