There are numerous references to gun swivels in the history of Fort Payne. One reference is from 1812, when General James Wilkinson purchased land on the east side of Mobile Bay for $5,000. He named his new settlement "Fort Payne" after himself and placed a gunship at the fort to protect it. GUNSWIVELS IN FORT PAYNE: 1800-1850 The first mention of gunswivels in Fort Payne comes from 1800, when Captain John Smith sailed into Mobile Bay and observed ships anchored off shore. He noted that some of these vessels had their cannons drawn back so they could fire over their heads while others were pointing straight down at the water. From this observation, Captain Smith determined that he needed something to protect his ship against boarding by pirates or other sea robbers. He ordered one of his sailors to build him a small catapult/gunswivel system which he called the "Gun-Powder Swivel." This system consisted of a stick with an iron pivot point at one end and a small ball Bearing at the other end that was swung around the pivot point by means of a leathern strap passed through two holes in its top. The Gun-Powder Swivel was used by Captain Smith to shoot arrows into the air as warning signals for any piratical seamen who might be approaching his shipyards ashore. AfterCaptain Smith's invention became available, other captains started to use it on their vessels as well. By 1810, gunswivels were being used all over America during War II because they helped reduce casualties among military personnel because now soldiers could direct gunfire more accurately than ever before due to their abilityTo swing their cannons around with ease! Also, these devices made naval warfare much easier since no longer would marines need to disembark and fight hand-to-hand combat against enemy combatants aboard enemy warships! Curiously enough, many years later (1948), Admiral Arthur Radford Weinreb patented what is now known as "the Weinreb Gun Swivel," which utilized modern technology and eliminated most of the drawbacks associated with earlier versions! In general, however, gunswives have been in use throughout American history and continue this trend today! What began as simple mechanisms for personal defense has turned into one of America's most popular arms - thanks in part togunswives!

The fort served as a major military installation until it was surrendered to the Alabama militia in 1865. Today, Fort Payne is a museum and tourist destination located on the banks of the Mobile River. The development of Fort Payne began with the construction of a small trading post by Captain John Smith in 1795. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson ordered the erection of a permanent military installation on Mobile Bay for defense against future Indian attacks. The site chosen for the fort was an swampy area at present-day Fort Payne, Alabama. Construction began in October 1812 and lasted until December 1813. The fortifications of Fort Payne were first designed by Captain James Cook and his assistant Lieutenant Alexander Maclachlan. The original cannons were brought over from England and installed in early November 1814. During its construction, Fort Payne suffered several defeats from Native American warriors including one resulting in the death of six soldiers and capture of several others. In 1865, after Confederate forces had surrendered at Appomattox Court House, all Union troops must leave Virginia except those guarding Petersburg (present day Yorktown). Northern troops burned down many homes along Winchester Road while evacuating Richmond so that no Confederate sympathizers remained behind to resist them should they retake Richmond later that year. As part of this process, many homes near what is now downtown Fort Payne were destroyed as well; however, most structures within blocks of where present-day Market Street and Winchester Road intersect remain standing today as part ofFort Payne's history museums/resorts district

The fort served as a military post and headquarters for the department of Alabama, until it was transferred to the United States Army in 1827. It was redesignated Fort Payne, Alabama, on October 15, 1827. The fort and its garrison were destroyed by fire on July 4, 1861, during the American Civil War.
