After falling into disrepair, Fort Payne was abandoned by United States forces in 1851 pursuant to treaty negotiations with Seminole Chief Osceola. In 1861, Confederate forces took advantage of this state-sponsored abandonment and looted many civilian buildings including the fortifications itself. Following World War II, much activity took place at Fort Payne which led to its present condition; it is open to the public as a museum today. Fort Payne is a small town in Alabama, United States. It was founded in 1814 by General Andrew Jackson and his men during the War of 1812. The fort served as their temporary home while they built elsewhere. The town was named for General Payne, who had been killed in action at the Battle of Fordow. The first settlers in Fort Payne were French Canadian refugees from Quebec who had fled to Mobile Bay during the 1810s. They organized into a company and recruited other Canadiens to help them build a log fort on the bluff overlooking Mobile Bay. The fort was completed in 1814 and served as an artillery post against Indian attacks until it was destroyed by Seminole Indians in 1817. Fort Payne reverted to Spanish control after the war ended and remained under Spanish military control until its occupation by American forces during Reconstruction. In 1865, it reverted back to American control following the end of Reconstruction and was renamed Fort Pickens pending local vote on whether to keep it or make it part of Decatur County. However, on November 3, 1870, a Bienville expedition discovered that Fort Pickens had been abandoned for years and recommended its abandonment effective immediately due to lack of financial support from Decatur County coffers. After many failed attempts over several decades,Fort Payne finally became an open-air museum dedicated to education and preservation of local history on December 4, 1988 when it opened as the Alabama Museum of Historical Technology (AMHT).
