Fort Payne is a post on the Alabama- Chattanooga Railroad, located in the town of Fort Payne, Alabama. The fort was built in 1864 to provide defense against Confederate attacks. It served as a supply depot and garrison until it was surrendered by Union forces in 1865. The fort has been preserved and is now open to the public as a Visitor Center and Museum. The first settlers in what is now Fort Payne were farmers who arrived from Kentucky around 1819. By 1840, there were about thirty households living at Fort Payne. In 1846, General Andrew Jackson ordered the construction of a forts along the Tennessee River for protection against Indian attack. The forts were named Forks of the Flint River after two forks of that river which separated Tennessee from Arkansas. At this time, Fort Payne consisted of just five buildings: an ammunition store, barrack house, cookhouse, ordnance store, and mess hall. In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate forces attacked Union troops at Fort Pillow near Chattanooga. Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his army to march southward instead of northward as planned due to fears that Confederate forces would cross into Georgia and attempt to attack him en route. As Union troops approached Nashville, they heard reports that Confederates had moved eastwards towards Mobile Bayou and Mobile Bayoushore onitentiary island in Pensacola Sound. Grant decided not to pursue his units further south but kept them anchored off shore so that he could disembark his soldiers if necessary and retreat back upriver should Confederate forces make an appearance). On December 15th 1862 nine artillery pieces belonging to Brigadier General James Moultrie arrived at Fort Payne from Huntsville with orders to blockade Corinth Ferry Bridge across Chickamauga Creek near present day Demopolis while supplies were transported overland from there via wagon path through SnowHill Pass National Battlefield Park On January 1st 1863 Majestic Horse Artillery Company under Colonel George Armstrong Custer began Battery A #1 firing upon CSS Sumter which soon became engulfed by smoke & fire; Captured cannons Excellent condition! $525 SOLD This battery greatly helped repel repeated Confederate assaults on our FORT PAYNE post thruout Chattanooga area during winter 1862- 1863
