As part of this endeavor he ordered Captain Phillips to build him a wharf on Mobile Bay so that supplies could be landed and brought upriver without being attacked by Seminoles or other Native Americans who might try to steal them. This wharf became known as Phillips Wharf after Captain Phillips who laid it out and helped create it; today's Pettibone Pier overlooks Phillips Wharf from where one can see both parts of Mobile Bay from one location In 1830 Major General Edward Prentice organized militia forces under his command when Confederate forces invaded Alabama from Georgia; according to some sources these troops were called into service as Patriot volunteers while others claim they did not leave their homes until late evening when they learned Confederate forces were attacking On March 6, 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Butler led an attack against Unionists at Camden Yards near Fort Pickens in south-central Pensacola County; several hundred Union defenders were killed or wounded while almost 800 Confederate men managed to escape including Butler himself In 1865 General William Tolerat surrendered Camp Pickett after six days siege amid increasing violence between Unionist and Confederate troops; during those six days 1,500 soldiers lost their lives with another 3,000 wounded or captured This event marks perhaps the worst defeat for American arms ever inflicted upon Confederacy
