It is named for General John A. Fuller who led American forces during the Spanish-American War. In 1865, General A.J.Cameron of Mobile landed with 3 companies of Confederate Infantry at Fort Union on the mouth of the Tombigbee River near present day Foley and postmarked his orders to "kill or capture as many Yankees as possible". Heading north upriver he encountered a force under General Worth march towards him with their cannons uplifted and bayonets outstretched - Cameron knew that Worth would not be willing to fight until he had destroyed all the Yankee stores in Foley and taken prisoners all around Mobile Bayou - so Cameron ordered his men to fire into these peaceful civilians before withdrawing back upriver unharmed. This story has been told many times but it is only one version of what happened that day The town of Foley was established on March 1st 1872 by Alexander Foyles family after they settled down inMobile County from Hagadah Parish (now east Baton Rouge Parish) . They were able to find land through surveying which was available because part of Pensacola Landing Block Grant Land Purchase from President Ulysses S Grant . The grant included 428 acres just south of present day downtown Foley The first post office opened in 1870 and continued open until 1901 Alexander Foyles started a blacksmith shop in 1793 along US Highway 90 about 4 miles northeast of today's downtown Foley Anchor Manufacturing Company built a Ships Dock & Wharf next door starting around 1876 which became known as 'Foley Pier' due to its location almost touching freshwater creek called 'Piney Creek'. In 1893 an ironclad ship called USS Constitution collided with her sister ship USS Olympia off shore while they were being towed back into dock after hittingched acrossogue bayou for repairs; both ships sank with over 100 people lost including Captain William Halsey who commandeered HMS Constitution then went ashore whenUSS Olympia got underway escort duty for Admiral Perry's Expedition against Mexico (see link below for more information) In 1898 there was heavy fighting between US Marines and Mexican troops during the Second Battle of Pico de la Mesa; 2 marines died including Lieutenant Samuel Wainwright who commanded Marine Unit One . Aftermath saw general Antonio López Trujillo come ashore from USS New Orleans seeking refuge after losing heavily at Pico de la Mesa while Vice President Alvaro Garza Aguirre tried reaching him aboard USS Lexington ; both men were captured alive by Mexican troops some time later ) In 1909 Mayor Edward Crouch proposed annexation of Rome Township located east sideof modern day downtown FoleyBayou becoming known as 'Foley Borough'. Overwhelming support resulted in incorporation on November 3rd 1911 naming it 'Foley Township' although there remain several buildings still standing today such as Post Office & School Annex
