In 1907, Alva Coke established a bottling plant there that still operates today as Covey Bottling Works Incorporated (CBO) located on US 441 south of Foley's downtown square. In 1955, Coca Cola merged with Pabst Brewing Company to form Edgar Wacker Associates which purchased Covey Bottling Works from Coke and continued production until 1996 when it sold its assets to PepsiCo USA parent company PepsiCo PLC effective January 1, 1997.[1] Coke remains headquartered in Tuscaloosaville where it operated its original bottling plant until its closure in 2006;[2][3] however, all operations have now been moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee since that city has become home to Pabst's headquarters for North American operations following Coca-Cola's merger with PepsiCo USA parent company PepsiCo PLC on January 1, 1997. After years of speculation over its future,[4] Coke announced on April 5th 2018 that it will close its Shelby County manufacturing plants by 2019 citing "operational challenges" caused by rising global temperatures and competition from other industries such as beer.[5][6] As part of this announcement, Coke also announced plans to sell off all but two percent of their assets worldwide—the remaining 80% would be held overseas—"in order to focus our resources more completely on our core businesses".[7] This marks the first time any major corporation has closed down their foreign subsidiaries since World War II,[8][9][10] though smaller companies have done so periodically throughout history due to changes in business regulations or overall economic conditions affecting those particular countries or regions/countries involved therein.
