Foley is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Foley is part of the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa-Hoover metropolitan area. Foley's post office has been in operation since 1881. Foley is located on the edge of a modern agricultural community that was settled by white settlers in the early 1800s. The first permanent settler in Foley was William Hinton, who arrived in 1819 and built a cabin on the present day town square. In 1821, David Capps bought land at what is now mile marker 9 on State Route 231 and founded Cappsville. By 1830, Foley had a school and a store. In 1837, John Gorman brought his family to Foley from Mobile Bayou and platted what are now three blocks of east side Main Street and two blocks of west side Court Street as Gorman Village. In 1840, General Robert Ewell Battle took position near downtown after being ordered to march against Fort Sumter during the American Civil War (1861–1865). He established his headquarters at what is now intersection of Court Street and Elm Avenue before marching into Bibb County with his army through town on November 11th for an event which involved parading through downtown streets decorated with bunting andflags while music played from buildings including The Globe Tavern where Battle's Headquarters were located until 1865 when he relocated to Tuscaloosa due to Confederate threats against nearby Union garrisons across Alabama The Battle House still stands today as one of Foley's most interesting historic landmarks along with many other businesses around its perimeter that have come or continue to come unchanged over time such as The Post Office which opened it’s doors July 21st 1906
Foley was founded in 1821 by John Foley and his father, Nicholas. The town quickly became a center for the cotton industry, with plantations dotting the landscape. In 1907, the town was renamed after General William Tecumseh Sherman.
